Hysteroscopy
What is hysteroscopy?
Hysteroscopy is a process by which the inner part of the uterus which is the endometrium lining can be seen through a small camera attached to the scope. This gives us a better view of what is inside the uterine cavity. If there are adhesions or polyps these can be removes in an operative hysteroscopy procedure. Once hysteroscopy is done the uterine is ready for Embryo transfer.
Who needs hysteroscopy?
You will be advised hysteroscopy if
1. If the endometrium om ultrasound does not go beyond 7mm on the highest dose of estrogen.
2. If the endometrium does not look triple line on ultrasound.
3 If a polyp is present in the uterine cavity.
4. If the fibroid is entering the uterine cavity.
5. If a uterine septum is present it can be removed in an operative hysteroscopy
6. If a patient has abnormal bleeding hysteroscopy can be used to diagnose the reason
Is hysteroscopy a painful procedure ?
Hysteroscopy is a 20 min procedure that is performed under anesthesia. A scope is inserted from the vagina into the cervix and then in the uterine cavity. This scope is extremely small and hence the procedure is painless. Some amount of post surgery cramps will stay for 2-3 hours.
How long do I have to stay in the hospital after hysteroscopy ?
Hysteroscopy is a day care procedure and you will be in the hospital for 3 to 4 hours. So if you come to the clinic by 10am you be home by 3pm.
How is Hysteroscopy procedure performed ?
On the day of the procedure the patient is told to visit the center at 10am without eating or drinking anything. Patient is asked to change in the OT gown and taken in the OT for short anesthesia. Once the patient is given anesthesia , a small scope is inserted from the vagina into the cervix and then in the uterus. The entire uterine cavity is seen , if there are any polys or adhesions are present they are removed with the help of an operative microscope , a microscope with scissors attached to it.
The entire procedure will take about 25 to 45 minutes in the operation theater. This is a minor procedure and there will be no scar on the body.
