What is low sperm count ?
If the semen sample has less than 15million sperms per millilitre of semen it is categorised as low sperm count. This is generally seen in the semen analysis test. Men with low sperm count will generally face difficulty in conceiving. This is called male factor infertility and is quite common in infertility patients 1 of 3 couple will face such infertility problems.

Why is there low sperm count?

What is low sperm motility, and can we conceive with less motility?
If the progressive motility of sperms in semen analysis is less than 30% , this falls into low motility. There are medicines to increase the sperm motility. If they don’t help then ICSI (intra cytoplasmic sperm injection) is the treatment of choice. With this treatment the couple will conceive within one month.
What are the reasons for low sperm motility?
- A genetic cause
- An undiagnosed medical condition
- Smoking
- Work induced infertility — particularly jobs which involve repeated trauma to the pelvic area.
- Health conditions such as varicocele (when veins in the scrotum become enlarged).
- Disorder in the male accessory sex gland secretion, leading to glands emptying more slowly.
